About

Explorers Lodge

Circa 1937, Explorers Lodge is a grand property built as a home for the Boyer Paper Mill by its Canadian owners at the time, with an exterior in a traditional New England style. The interior features prominent use of Tasmanian timbers with art deco features, reminiscent of the period and still evident today. The property was part of a six residence private estate for senior management starting at what is now the intersection of Pearson Street, Sixth Avenue and Derwent Terrace. The six original homes remain today with Explorers Lodge taking pride of place as the largest. Over the years the property has been home to the Boyer Papermill director, a small school for the Quaker Church (as friends of God the property took on the name “Friends Lodge”) before becoming a bed and breakfast in the 1980’s. The property has expanded from its beginnings with two additional wings added in the 1960’s. An extensive refurbishment and upgrade concluded in 2018 before being bought by your hosts and current owners, Michael and Roberto in 2019.
